What is happening in the Chinese legal market in 2007?

Opportunities for US trained Chinese attorneys

On January 23, 2007, Chinese American Lawyers of Bay Area (“CALOBA”) and Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP proudly present a seminar on the legal market of China and exciting opportunities for US trained attorneys, particularly those who can speak or even write Chinese.

CALOBA is a non-profit organization of Chinese attorneys and law students who are interested in the promotion of career advancement of Chinese attorneys in the U.S. and in China, and the mutual exchange between the Chinese and US legal communities.  Many members of this organization were born and raised in China, Taiwan, or HongKong, received or current receiving legal education in the United States, and currently work or study in the bay area. This seminar is the first event in 2007.  Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP is a leading internal law firm with offices in Beijing, Shanghai, HongKong, Taipei, and Tokyo.  www.orrick.com  It has some of the most experienced attorneys who have worked in China since the first international law firm opened office in China.  It always seeks talented attorneys with Chinese language skills to work in its Greater China offices or in US offices on China-related matters .

China Legal Career (“CLC”) is a Beijing-based specialist legal recruiting company which works across China for a client base that includes major international and local companies and law firms of all types. www.chinalegalcareer.com  The company works exclusively in the US with its local partner Mlegal Consulting, Inc., a Bay Area based legal recruiting company with offices in San Francisco and Palo Alto.  www.mlegalconsulting.com  CLC founder and CEO Frazer Xia and his colleague Steven Shou will be in the Bay Area with their Mlegal colleagues answering questions about the latest developments in the rapidly evolving Chinese legal recruitment market.  The seminar will be conducted mostly in English but there may be some Chinese language comments, questions, and answers.

Topics include:

-          What is happening in law firms in China? How are the international firms faring, and what opportunities exist in the fast growing local firms.?

-          In house roles: how many, how hard are they to get and what are the companies generally looking for?

-          Do the employers have any preference between Chinese educated or US educated Chinese lawyers and if so how does this affect job mobility?

Location
Mesa Verde Conference Room,
Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP
1000 Marsh Road
Menlo Park, CA 94025

Direction:  Orrick’s 1000 building is one block from the Marsh Road Exit of 101.  After taking the exit, drive west (turn left if you drive from the south, turn right if you drive from the north) and pass one traffic light, then turn left into a drive way.  If you miss the drive way, you can make a left turn at the second traffic light, and turn left into the parking lot.  You should see a Starbucks on your right hand side at that intersection.  If you pass the Starbucks, you have gone too far.  The 1000 building is the building closest to Marsh Road.
